Looking at the Green Wave

With three matches left in the season, the Green Wave will look to push their Conference USA win total to ten, but will have to win a pair of road matches this weekend to give them a chance at reaching double-digit wins in C-USA at home against Southern Miss to close out the season. The Green Wave are 10-19 overall and sit at 7-10 in conference play entering the final two weeks of the season.

The offense has continued to run through sophomore Izabela Grot, who leads the team with 329 kills and ranks tenth in Conference USA with 3.23 kills per set. Milica Jovic, another TU sophomore, ranks 17th in Conference USA with 2.76 kills per set, while Cori Martone has had a good showing over her last ten matches, ranking second on the squad with 100 kills, or 2.56 per set.

Mel Mandelbaum has moved into the top-ten in single season history with 917 assists, sitting in a tie for tenth with Luna Rebrovic. Senior Lindsey Shepard is currently sitting in ninth on the single season attaching percentage charts, hitting .326 in 466 attempts. Shepard currently sits fifth on the career chats in blocking assists (312), seventh in total blocks (364), eighth in attacking percentage (.293) and 9th in solo blocks (52).

Scouting the Pirates

It has been a tough season for the Pirates, who are 1-27 overall, 0-16 in Conference USA and enter the weekend on a 16 match losing streak. Their lone win came against Binghamton on September 18. East Carolina is one of just ten teams with two-or-less wins in the nation, at this time, with four winless teams and five, two-win squads in Division I.

Amanda Lutzow paces the Pirate attack with 191 kills and 13 service aces, while ranking second on the team with 205 digs. Freshman setter Kasey Kavanaugh ranks 12th among her Conference USA foes with 569 helpers this season in 79 sets played. Brittney Roper has added 181 kills and Jackie Varnum has 172 kills. Libero Nicole Jones leads the team with 273 digs.

Last weekend, East Carolina dropped a pair of decisions in Houston, with Rice topping the Pirates 3-1 on Saturday and Houston taking a 3-0 decision on Friday. In the two matches, ECU posted 56 kills, but committed 46 hitting errors, while adding nine blocks in each competition. Lutzow had ten kills versus the Owls to lead the squad, while Varnum led the squad with six kills against the Cougars.

Scouting the Thundering Herd

Marshall enters the weekend with a 10-18 overall record and a 4-12 Conference USA mark, losing 11 of their last 12 matches. The Thundering Herd has dropped four of those matches in five sets and has played nine total five-setters thus far in 2010.

Elizabeth Fleming was the Conference USA Setter of the Week after posting match-high assist totals in both matches last week. She handed out 39 helpers versus Rice and added 56 assists at Houston, while surpassing the 5,000 career assist plateau against the Owls. This season, Fleming has 1,082 assists and has sent over 1000 of her set towards senior outside hitter Elizabeth Herman. Herman has a team-high 398 kills in 1022 swings this season to go along with 56 blocks.

Last weekend, the Thundering Herd split a pair of matches during a road trip to Houston, winning 3-0 on Friday evening against Rice and falling 3-2 at Houston on Sunday. Herman posted 21 kills for a match-high against the Owls, while Laura Der added six kills and 13 digs. The match-high in kills went to Marshall's Abby Tomas on Sunday versus the Cougars, with the sophomore churning out 20 kills in the loss.
