COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Tulane University volleyball team will close out the 2005 regular season over the weekend when the Green Wave play host to Conference USA foes Tulsa and SMU on Friday and Sunday, respectively, at the G. Rollie White Coliseum on the campus of Texas A&M University.
The Green Wave, which had to fight through inexperience and being relocated following Hurricane Katrina, will use the weekend as a springboard heading into the C-USA Tournament, which is slated to begin on Thursday, Nov. 17, at Rices' Autry Court in Houston.
"This is our last `home' weekend, and we are looking forward to a pair of hard-fought matches against a pair of quality teams," first-year Tulane head coach Liz Kritza said. We want to finish off the season on a high note and then turn our focus toward Conference USA Tournament."
Tulane enters the weekend 3-13 on the year and 2-11 in C-USA play, but have shown signs of continued development recently. As a team, the Green Wave average 14.89 kills, 13.98 assists and 17.69 digs per game. Over the past four matches, however, the Tulane team has improved its kills average by 1.5 per game, upped its assists average by 1.2 and digs by 1.41.
Freshman outside hitter Sara Radosevic leads the Green Wave offense with 5.17 kills per game, which ranks second in C-USA and 12th in the nation, while junior right-side hitter Sara Thorson and rookie outside Bridget Wells follow with averages of 2.68 and 2.44, respectively.
Senior libero Kelli Dickson, who was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI third-team on Thursday, paces the Green Wave defense with 5.69 digs per game, which ranks second in C-USA and 14th in the NCAA. Rookie setter Luna Rebrovic leads the team with 12.48 assists per contests.
The position with the largest improvement as the season has progressed is at the middle blocker position where freshmen Lauren Boatwright and Jen Linder have come on strong lately. Boatwright leads Tulane with 1.25 blocks per game while adding 1.57 kills per outing, while Linder chips in with 1.67 kills and 0.61 blocks per stanza.
Admission to this weekend's contests is fre, but a donation box will be at the main ticket window for anyone wishing to make a monetary contribution to the Tulane Athletic Department. SUNDAY FESTIVITIES: Tulane's regular-season finale vs. SMU will be part of a special Sunday as the Green Wave plan a host of activities in conjunction with the match. Green Wave Athletics Director Rick Dickson will be on hand for a pre-match ceremony recognizing Tulane seniors Kelli Dickson and Blair Moon, and he will also participate in a mid-match ceremony to present the 2005 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Champion Green Wave team. Following the match, fans are invited to attend a Tulane cookout sponsored by the Ray Hester Booster Club in the parking lot of the Olson Baseball Field on the campus of Texas A&M.
