NEW ORLEANS - After helping the Green Wave establish a new home-winning streak record with a 3-0 win over Rice on Sunday, Tulane University volleyball standout Jenn Miller was named Conference USA Defensive Player the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The weekly honor was the second in a row for the junior from San Pedro, Calif., and has now earned C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors seven times in her career. Last season, Miller claimed C-USA weekly recognition four times en route to being named the league's Libero of the Year.
Miller averaged 4.00 digs per game over the weekend while helping the Green Wave post C-USA victories over Houston and Rice. She posted 11 digs in Friday's straight-sets win over the Cougars and followed that up with a 17-dig effort on Sunday against the Owls. Miller's defensive effort helped Tulane hold opponents to a .148 attack percentage (88 kills, 50 errors, 256 attacks).
For the season, Miller leads the team with 182 digs and a 3.79 digs-per-set average, which ranks sixth in C-USA. Miller now has 1,298 digs for her career, which ranks third in Tulane career history. She is just 29 digs shy of Kelli Dickson (2002-05) for second place in school history , and 68 shy of Karlyn Daly's school record of 1,366 digs from 2000-03.
Miller and the Green Wave return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, when they begin a four-match road swing at Memphis. From there, Tulane will take on league foes UAB on Sunday, Oct. 5, in Birmingham, Ala., Tulsa on Friday, Oct. 7 p.m., in Oklahoma, and SMU on Sunday, Oct. 12, in Dallas. Tulane's next home match is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 14, when the Green Wave play host to cross-town UNO at 7 p.m. in Fogelman Arena. POLL POSITION: With a pair of Conference USA victories over the weekend, the Tulane University volleyball team continues to climb in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25. While the Green Wave are still looking to crack the Top 25 for the first time in school history, Tulane did garner 29 votes in Monday's poll which puts the team 30th in the voting. The 29 votes is a 25-vote jump from a week ago when the Wave had four votes to sit tied for 35th nationally.
