Sept. 17, 2012
NEW ORLEANS - For the first time this season and second time in her career, junior Cori Martone earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors. The outside hitter/middle blocker was named to the Kathy Trosclair Memorial All-Tournament after leading the team with 5.83 points per set, a 5.25 kills per set average and a 2.75 digs per set average.
This is the first weekly award of the season for Martone and is her second career honor. Martone also earned the weekly recognition after having solid matches at UCF and at UTEP during the 2010 season.
In three matches, Martone converted on 63 kills, added four service aces, boasted five blocks and tallied 33 digs. The junior also posted a season-best hitting percentage of .310 on the weekend, including a .436 attacking percentage in a three set win against UTEP to open the Kathy Trosclair Memorial. She totaled 70 points on the weekend to help the Olive and Blue grab a runner-up finish at their final home tournament of the season.
Martone cranked out 22 kills on 39 attacks - committing just five errors - to lead all players. She added 15 digs to grab her first double-double of the weekend, while her four service errors and two blocks gave her 27 total points on the evening and help the Green Wave open the Conference USA slate with a victory.
On Saturday, Martone had the best match of her career against Binghamton with a career-high 30 kills. She again grabbed a double-double with 14 digs and boasted 31 points overall. It was her second 30-plus point effort of the season and is one of two players in Conference USA with more than one such outing in 2012.
On the year, Martone leads the team with 196 kills - ranking third in C-USA - and 153 digs and is tied with Grace Weaver for the team lead with eight double-doubles. The junior has 18 service aces, 16 assists and 18 total blocks to accumulate 225 points on the year.
