NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University volleyball team opens the 2006 season on Friday, Aug. 25, when it plays host to Lamar, McNeese State and cross-town foe UNO in the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament at the Reily Student Recreation Center.

The two-day tournament has been moved from the Green Wave's traditional on-campus facility - Fogelman Arena - to the Reily Center as part of the University's Freshman Orientation. Admission for all six matches of the Trosclair Tournament will be free of charge.

The tournament opens with UNO battling McNeese State at 5 p.m. before Tulane takes on Lamar at 7:30 p.m. The event continues on Saturday at 11 a.m. when UNO squares off against Lamar. From there, the Green Wave sandwich matches against McNeese State and UNO at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, around a 5 p.m. matchup between McNeese State and Lamar.

"This is a great way for us to capture the attention of all the incoming freshmen and their parents," second-year head coach Liz Kritza said. "It's an opportunity to showcase our program in a venue we do not usually get the chance to use in Reily.

"I think everyone is excited about playing that first weekend, especially after a couple of weeks of grueling practices. We're young, and this weekend along with the preconference portion of our schedule will help us build an identity as a team. We will be facing quality competition, and our annual matchup with UNO will be a special match because of what both schools had to go through the past year."

The Trosclair Tournament marks the first time the Green Wave will play on campus since last Aug. 26, when Tulane defeated Nicholls State, 3-0, in the season opener a year ago. From there, the team was forced to relocate to College Station, Texas, and the campus of Texas A&M University following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The Green Wave return five starters among seven letterwinner from a year ago, including sophomore outside hitter Sara Radosevic, who was named AVCA All-American and earned Conference USA and AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year honors, and sophomore setter Luna Rebrovic, who claimed C-USA All-Freshman Team honors in 2005.

Despite going 3-14 during last regular season, Tulane put it all together in the C-USA Tournament to defeat host Rice and Tulsa and advance to the tournament semifinals for the first time since 1997. Joining the team in 2006 are a trio of true freshmen - setter/right-side hitter Rachel Lindelow (Mandeville, La.), libero Jenn Miller (San Pedro, Calif.) and outside hitter/middle blocker Ksenija Vlaskovic (Pozarevac, Serbia & Montenegro).

The Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament is held annually in honor of the late Kathy Trosclair. Trosclair coached the Green Wave from 1981-87 and stands as the school's career leader in wins with 174. She posted 20-plus wins in seven of her eight seasons at the helm, including a pair of 30-win campaigns.

In 1986, her team set the Tulane single-season wins mark by going 31-6, but the record would not last long as her 1987 club went 33-7. Following the 1987 season, Trosclair was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, her health deteriorated quickly, and she died soon afterward.

For her accomplishments during her lifetime, Trosclair was named Southeast Region and Louisiana Coach of the Year in 1987, was voted into the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and was inducted posthumously into the Tulane Hall of Fame in 2004.

Following the Trosclair Tournament, the Tulane team will enjoy an open period over Labor Day weekend before traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, where the Green Wave will take on host Iowa, UMKC and Florida Atlantic on Sept. 8-9. Tulane's next home match is slated for Sept. 22 when it returns to Fogelman Arena to square off against C-USA foe East Carolina at 7 p.m.
