2002 Schedule

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Matches against eight NCAA Tournament participants and five clubs that finished the 2001 season ranked in the national polls highlight the 2002 Tulane University volleyball schedule, head coach Betsy Becker announced Thursday.

The Green Wave slate for 2002 features five regular-season tournaments, including a trip to San Diego, Calif. For the San Diego State Invitational, another to Madison, Wisc. for the Badger Invitational, and a final trip to Dallas for the SMU Invitational. Tulane also hosts the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament and the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic, and will play in the first ever NCAA Division I volleyball game played in the New Orleans Arena.

"I think we've got a good balance of nationally prominent teams and teams that we can compete with," Becker said. "The key is going to be to win the matches we're supposed to win, to be competitive in the matches against ranked teams and take a few upsets home with us.

"It's a case of good news/bad news, though. We might drop a few games early, but after facing teams like Cal, San Diego State and Santa Barbara, we'll be able to look across the net later in the year against the top teams in our conference like Louisville and Cincinnati, and we will be more prepared for them because we will be game tested."

Tulane opens its 14-match home season on Sept. 3 with a doubleheader vs. Prairie View and Jackson State while playing host to UNO, LSU, Louisiana Tech in the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Classic three days later. The Green Wave also play in-state foe Centenary and Conference USA opponents Saint Louis, South Florida, UAB, Cincinnati, Louisville, Southern Miss and Memphis in Fogelman Arena.

After playing road tournaments in California, Wisconsin and Dallas, the Green Wave also travels to play league rivals Houston, TCU, DePaul, Marquette Charlotte and East Carolina while taking on in-state foe Nicholls State and cross-town rival UNO at Stopher Gym and the Lakefront Arena, respectively.

A final interesting aspect of the 2002 Green Wave schedule is the Oct. 1 match against UL-Lafayette in the New Orleans Arena. The 5 p.m. contest is the first college volleyball game to be played in the arena in anticipation of the 2002 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship, which the facility is hosting at the end of the season.

The Green Wave return 11 letterwinner and five starters from last year's team including second-team All-Conference USA honorees Britney Hurst and Anastasia Kenon. In addition to returning starters Katie Case, Karlyn Daly and Deva Fowler, Tulane also added a two-year collegiate letterwinner in UMass transfer Nitia Small and local high school standout Kelli Dickson.
