NEW ORLEANS - Tulane University volleyball standout Tea Juric will get an opportunity to represent her country in international competition as the rising Green Wave sophomore will play for Team Croatia during the 2014 FIVB U23 Beach Volleyball World Championship from June 10-15 in Myslowice, Poland.
A native of Kastel Stari, Croatia, Juric will team with 22-year-old Maja Rosko and the tandem is one of 44 pairs to take part in the second-annual age-division event. Earning a spot in the U23 Championship comes following a 2013-14 season which saw Juric claim Conference USA Freshman of the Year recognition during fall in the indoor game and earning a bid to participate in the 2014 AVCA College Sand Volleyball National Championship in the spring.
"It is a great honor to play for your country and we are proud of Tea for being selected to compete for her home country in this event against the best very best U23 beach players in the world," Tulane sand volleyball head coach Wayne Holly said. "The experience will improve her as a player and will in turn make a great contribution to our team as whole."
As a rookie on the Green Wave's sand volleyball team, Juric teamed with sophomore Jackie Wegner and the tandem played at the top of the Tulane line-up throughout the 2014 season. Along the way, the duo posted a 19-15 overall record, including a 8-7 mark in dual-match action. In pairs play, Juric and Wegner sported a 10-5 regular-season mark including an Upper Division Pairs Bracket win at the Stetson Spring Break Tournament on March 8.
With the indoor team in the fall, Juric posted 446 kills, 285 digs, 36 blocks, 24 service aces and 18 assists while helping lead the Green Wave to a 28-4 overall record, a second-place showing in C-USA with a 12-2 mark, and an appearance in the 2013 C-USA Championship title game.
Along the way, she posted career highs of 26 kills vs Toledo on Sept. 6, 17 digs at Youngstown State on Sept. 6, four aces at North Texas on Nov. 3 and four blocks both at Radford on Sept. 20 and against UAB on No. 22. In addition to claiming C-USA Freshman of the Year honors, Juric was tabbed honorable-mention AVCA All-Southwest Region, first-team All C-USA and All-Louisiana, Louisiana Co-Freshman of the Year and to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
She was named C-USA Player of the Week on Oct. 7, 2013 and MVP of the Radford Highlander Classic while claiming all-tournament honors at the Youngstown Invitational.
