Lindsey Shepard blogs from the halfway point of the team's trip to Croatia

May 31, 2008

Today marks the halfway point of our overseas volleyball tour. Despite being in Croatia for over a week, we are staying as busy as ever. Coming off an exciting free day of sightseeing, relaxing, and having fun, we got right back to business with a morning practice and an afternoon match. We played four games against the Pula team.

One of the most entertaining portions of the day was watching the antics of the opposing coach. As we walked into the gym to start preparing for our match, he was on the court dancing to the blaring Croatia music and goofing off with his players.

However, the second the whistle blew he was completely serious and very intense. He regularly yelled at his players and even made a girl run stadiums for hitting a ball out and laughing. Other than being entertained by the coaches interesting techniques our match was disappointing. But, as with all sub-par performances we are now faced with an opportunity to learn from it and use the experience to help us achieve our future goals.

This is the most a Tulane volleyball team has ever played in one year, the furthest a team has traveled, and the longest trip our team has taken. I was a little worried about the team being in such close proximity for so long, but if anything we are all getting closer to each other sharing this experience. Being one of only two freshmen - now sophomores, I have spent the least amount of time with the girls.

I have had a blast getting to know everyone and learning about my teammates. I am so lucky to have such an awesome group of girls to share my first European experience with. Croatia is a beautiful place to spend it. I look one way and see a gorgeous coast with crystal clear water and I look another and see mountains coated in green with authentic stone castles peeking out over the trees. I am no doubt looking forward to the last week of our journey.

Bok bok! Lindsey
