Final Stats

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Seniors Deva Fowler and Lindsey Norman hit better than .700 for the match, and the Tulane defense tallied 53 digs and seven blocks as the Tulane University volleyball team made quick work of Jackson State in a 3-0 win Tuesday evening at Fogelman Arena.

The Green Wave won the first two games easily, with identical 30-14 decisions, and survived a late threat by the Lady Tigers in game three to hold on for a 30-28 victory. With the win, Tulane snaps a five-match losing streak to improve to 14-9 on the year. Jackson State, meanwhile, falls to 14-16 in 2004.

"It feels good to win again," head coach Betsy Becker said. "It seems like we've been on a winning hiatus, but we never stopped working at any point in the season. We knew that if we just kept working hard and trying to improve, things would turn our way."

Fowler led all players with 18 kills, and Norman was third on the club with 11. Neither had an error on the night as Fowler had 24 swings to post a .750 attack percentage, while Norman was flawless in 14 attempts to finish the night with a .786 clip. As a team, the Green Wave hit .400 with 61 kills and just 15 errors in 115 swings, as freshman setter Brittany Esser ran an efficient offense with 54 of the team's 58 assists.

"Deva and Lindsey were really just about perfect tonight," Becker said. "It's tough to hit .700, and I don't care who you're playing against. We've got two more matches this weekend before the conference tournament, and we hope to keep this momentum going right up through the trip to Louisville."

Senior outside hitter Anastasia Kenon also had a solid night at the net for the Green Wave, hitting .417 with 13 kills and three errors in 24 swings. Junior libero Kelli Dickson, who actually lined up at outside hitter in game three, led Tulane with 11 digs, and sophomore right-side hitter Blair Moon was close behind with 10.

Jackson State was led Chinyere Marner, who posted eight kills and five block assists. Kimberly Hendon was second on the club with six kills, and Shinician Danielly led all players with 14 digs.

Tulane returns to action on Friday, Nov. 12, when the Green Wave take on C-USA foe UAB at 7 p.m. in Fogelman Arena. Friday night is also "Parent's Night" as the parents of the Green Wave players will be recognized before the match. One night later, Tulane closes out its 2004 home schedule with a 7 p.m. showdown with league rival USF at 7 p.m., and prior to that match, the Green Wave will honor its seniors.
