Volleyball Extends Season-Opening Winning Streak in Defeat of Texas Southern

NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's volleyball team rattled off their ninth-straight win to open the 2013 campaign with a three-set victory over Texas Southern at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic at Devlin Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon.

Tulane had to claw back during the first set against the Tigers, eventually winning 25-21 before the team gelled during the remainder of the match, winning set two 25-15 and the third 25-16.

The Green Wave had three freshmen who posted double-digit kills, with Tea Juric leading the way with 13. Sarah Strasner notched 12 while Annie Shurtz added 11. Shurtz also led the team in service aces with two.

Senior Mel Mandelbaum once again led the team in assists with 26. Junior Grace Weaver posted a team-high 13 digs while Strasner and Mandelbaum led the team in block assists with two each.
