Volleyball Sweeps Prairie View A&M In Season Opener, 3-0
Sept. 1, 2004 NEW ORLEANS, La. - Eleven players - including five newcomers - took the court for the Green Wave as the Tulane University volleyball team used a complete-team effort to defeat Prairie View A&M, 3-0, in the season opener for both teams Wednesday evening at Fogelman Arena. Senior middle blocker Deva Fowler paced the Green Wave with 12 kills and five block assists, and freshman outside hitter Sarah Weiland tallied nine kills and a match-best 10 digs. Tulane (1-0) hit .348 for the game with 46 kills and just 14 errors in 92 swings, while the Green Wave defense held the Panthers (0-1) to a -.070 clip (15 kills, 21 errors, 86 attacks). "It's always good to get your first win under your belt," head coach Betsy Becker said. "Any time you play, you want to get better. We got a win tonight, but there are a lot of things we have got to improve on in order to achieve the goals we've set for the season. "One of the really bright spots we can take from this match is that we were able to play just about everyone and never skipped a beat. We can embrace and capitalize on our depth, and that will take us a long way this season." Weiland paced the fresh faces on the Tulane roster as newcomers combined for 25 kills, 14 assists, 19 digs and four block assists. Sophomore right-side hitter Blair Moon posted eight kills in her Green Wave debut, and rookie setter Brittany Esser tallied 12 assists and three kills as she directed the offense during game two. Jamesha Sutton led Prairie View with seven kills and seven digs, but her effort was not enough to overcome a hard-luck hitting night by the Panthers as six of the visitors posted negative attack percentages.
The Green Wave returns to action over the weekend when Tulane plays host to the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Classic in Fogelman Arena. Tulane will take on Nicholls State on Friday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. before battling Southern Illinois and Georgetown on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 1 and 7 p.m., respectively.
