Volleyball Adds Serna to Coaching Staff

Serna Spent Two Seasons at USF After Playing Three Seasons at UCF

Stephanie Serna enters her first season on the sidelines for the Green Wave after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida. An American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region selection as a senior at UCF, Serna will serve as the recruiting coordinator as well as aiding with practice and match preparation while on the Uptown campus.

No stranger to Conference USA, Serna was an All-C-USA performer during her three seasons at UCF and earned AVCA All-Region accolades as a senior for the Knights. Moving into the assistant coach role will be nothing new for the San Antonio, Texas native, as she was involved in nearly every aspect of the Bulls program during her time on campus. Serna helped with recruiting, event management, community service activities, strength and conditioning and academics.

In two seasons with the Bulls, the former outside hitter/opposite was a part of 22 victories on the court and watched as her pupils earned All-American, All-Region and All-BIG EAST Conference accolades on the court. During her first season in Tampa, Serna helped Allie Boaz earn Honorable Mention All-America and First Team All-Northeast Region accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, as well as a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team. In 2010, freshman Valerie El Houssine ranked second in the BIG EAST Conference in kills and points per-set to earn a nod to the All-Conference Second Team.

The first UCF player to earn All-Conference USA laurels, Serna was a Second Team All-C-USA pick as a senior in 2008 and received Honorable Mention All-Midwest Regional from the AVCA after ranking among the conference leaders in hitting percentage and kills per-set. In her career, she earned the 2007 UCF Coach's Award, Bright House Student-Athlete of the Week and was named to an in-season all-tournament team four times.

Serna closed her career with two straight 300-plus kill seasons and totaled 896 kills in three seasons with the Knights. A well-rounded player on the court, she filled the stat sheet during her career as she also amassed 199 blocks, 160 digs, 37 assists and 19 service aces. Spending her first collegiate season at Birmingham Southern, her career totals reached 949 kills and 213 blocks.

After her collegiate career, Serna showcased her skills as a part of the Slovenian Federation National Team in 2009, where she was a member of the Tarbor-Maribor Volleyball Club until January 2010. Following her time overseas, Serna was named one of the 10 recipients of the 2010 Minority Coaches Scholarship, and in 2011 was selected as an assistant coach of Florida Region High Performance (HP) Team, announced by USA Volleyball.

She is no stranger to this type of work, as Serna was previously involved in administration and organized team travel at the prestigious Orlando Volleyball Academy. She was also the Beach Club Director and director of indoor and outdoor camps, earning the 2007-08 OVA Coach of the Year Award.

Serna earned a bachelor of arts and humanities in history from UCF in 2009.
