NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Anneli Axsater and Joyce Bergman each posted wins in the A Flight singles draw at the Tulane Green Wave Women's Tennis Classic on Saturday.
Axsater recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over LSU's Amy McIlhaney, while Bergman was a 6-1, 7-5 victor over Louisiana-Lafayette's Arina Uratani. Tulane's Anna Monhartova did not play on Saturday after suffering a minor injury on Friday.
In the B Flight singles draw, Green Wave players Lucy Wood and Olga Mikhailova each lost in the semifinals. Wood dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision to South Alabama's Josien Boverhof, while Mikhailova fell 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to USA's Marcela Kotesovcova.
In doubles action, Mikhailova and Wave teammate Maiko Cook reaced the semifinals thanks to a 9-7 win over the South Alabama duo of Scheltens and Boverhof, but dropped an 8-5 decision to LSU's team of Tsucumoto and McIlhaney to miss out on a spot in the finals. The Tulane tandem of Axsater and Wood also turned in a 9-8 win over the UNO team of Hallstrom and Hedenberg.
Action at the Green Wave Classic continues Sunday at the Goldring Tennis Complex on the Tulane campus.
