NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane women's tennis player Joyce Bergman posted an upset over the nation's 44th-ranked player at the Tulane Green Wave Classic on Friday.
Bergman posted a 7-6, 0-6, 6-3 win over top-seeded Mira Radu of Mississippi in the first round of the A Flight singles event. Radu was ranked ended last season ranked 36th, but is listed 44th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
"This was an absolutely phenomenal win," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "Joyce showed incredible determination and a tremendous fighting spirit today. This may have been the biggest upset in women's college tennis this fall."
Tulane senior Anna Monhartova and sophomore Julie Morris also won their first-round matches. Monhartova cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over UNO's Ana Santoro, while Morris was a 6-1, 6-2 victor against Arina Uratani of Louisiana-Lafayette.
In the B Flight singles draw, Tulane's Olga Mikhailova and Lucy Wood both advanced to the semifinals after a pair of wins on Friday. Mikhailova started the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mary Howell of UNO before claiming a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Southern Mississippi's Shawny Price. Wood was a 7-5, 6-4 winner against USM's Jackie Prew and posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over LSU's Mandy Rice.
Action continues at the Green Wave Classic on Saturday. The event is held at the Goldring Tennis Complex on the Tulane campus.
