PACIFIC PALLISADES, Calif. - - Anna Monhartova's run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Riviera All-American came to and end on Thursday, as the senior lost in the Round of 16.
Monhartova dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 decision to Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso in the main draw of the event. The match marked the second time this season that Dasso has ended Monhartova's stay in one of the ITA major tournaments. Dasso entered directly into the tournament's main draw after being ranked 19th in the latest ITA poll. Monhartova, ranked 67th in the latest ITA poll, reached the main draw after posting three wins in the qualifying draw.
"Both players played very well," said head coach David Schumacher. "The match was nearly two hours long and it was a very high level of tennis. Anna had some leads that she just couldn't convert into wins. I think coming through the qualifying draw took its toll on her. She had an outstanding tournament, though. With the wins she's already turned in, she should vault into the Top 30 in the next rankings. The great thing is that she has been improving throughout the fall. She started the year strong, but is getting stronger. Her best tennis is still in front of her."
A senior from Plzen, Czech Republic, Monhartova has turned in a 14-2 record so far this fall and has reached at least the Round of 16 at the ITA's two major tournaments, the National Clay Court Championships, where she reached the semifinals, and the ITA Riviera All-American.
