PACIFIC PALLISADES, Calif. - - Tulane women's tennis player Anna Monhartova posted yet another upset to reach the second round of the main draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Riviera All-American on Thursday.
Monhartova posted an impressive 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 4 seed Julie DeRoo of Mississippi in the first round. DeRoo entered the tournament ranked 28th in the latest ITA poll, while Monhartova checked in at 67th.
"DeRoo has one of the biggest forehands in women's college tennis," head coach David Schumacher said. "Anna was able to take her best punches and give it right back. This is a great win for her and for the women's tennis program at Tulane."
A senior from Plzen, Czech Republic, Monhartova will next face Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso, who upset the No. 3 seed Kristina Kraszewski of Washington, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. Dasso is ranked 19th in the latest ITA poll.
Monhartova and Dasso are familiar foes, as the two faced each other in the semifinals of the ITA National Clay Court Championships a few weeks ago. In that match, Dasso claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
Action continues at the ITA Riviera All-American on Friday.
