PACIFIC PALLISADES, Calif. - - Tulane women's tennis player Anna Monhartova upset the No. 8 seed in the qualifying draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Riviera All-American Championship on Wednesday.
Monhartova posted a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over North Carolina's Marlene Mejia, earning a spot in the main draw. Mejia entered the tournament ranked 42nd in the latest ITA rankings, while Monhartova was ranked 67th.
A senior from Plzen, Czech Republic, Monhartova is now one of 32 players to advance to the main draw of the ITA All-American. The top 24 ranked players in the country automatically qualify, while Monhartova is one of eight players who advance via the qualifying draw. Monhartova is the first women's player in Tulane history to reach the ITA main draw.
"Anna is really fighting hard," head coach David Schumacher said. "This is not her best surface, but she's done a great job of hanging in with the big hitters. She has really played some gutsy tennis and has done better than we expected."
Monhartova will find out her opening main draw opponent when the match-ups are announced late Wednesday evening. Action continues on Thursday.
