PACIFIC PALLISADES, Calif. - - Tulane senior women's tennis player Anna Monhartova defeated a pair of Top 100 players to advance in the qualifying draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Riveria All-American Tournament on Tuesday.
In the first round of the event, Monhartova posted a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Southern Cal's Anita Loyola. Loyola is ranked 99th in the most recent ITA poll. Monhartova then upset the tournament's No. 10 seed, Fay DeVera from Arizona State, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. DeVera was ranked 46th in the latest ITA poll.
Monhartova next faces either North Carolina's Marlene Mejia or the tournament's No. 8 seed, Northwestern's Colleen Cheng. Should she win that match, Monhartova would advance to the main draw of the ITA Riviera All-American.
Monhartova has posted a record of 12-1 so far this season, having advanced to the semifinals of the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships three weeks ago.
