NEW ORLEANS, La. - - For the second straight season, Tulane women's tennis player Anna Monhartova has earned the Southwest Region's TENNIS Magazine/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award.

Monhartova is now eligible for the national award, which will be named in June.

"This is probably the most prestigious regional and national award in college tennis," Tulane women's tennis head coach David Schumacher said. "Anna exemplifies the qualities this honor represents and is certainly deserving of the recognition."

To be eligible for the Ashe Award, a player must be either a junior or a senior. It is awarded by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, and who has displayed scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Monhartova is joined by winners from six other regions. They include: American's Regan Campbell from the East Region, Kentucky's Carolina Mayorga from from the Southeast Region, Florida State's Nanette Duxin from the South Region, New Mexico's Natalia Alekhova from the Central Region, California's Anita Kurimay from the Northwest Region and Arizona's Michelle Gough from the West Region.

The winner of the national award will be flown to New York to participate in the awards ceremony during the Rolex All-Star Luncheon. In addition, the winner will receive recognition in Tennis Magazine.

Monhartova, a senior from Plzen, Czech Republic, returns to action next week in the singles draw of the NCAA Tournament.
