NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's 40th-ranked women's tennis team will open the 2013 Conference USA Championships as the No. 4 seed and the Green Wave will begin its quest toward the league title with the first match of the Championship against Southern Miss on Thursday, April 18 at 8 a.m.
The four-day event, which is hosted by the University of Houston, is set for April 18-21 and will be played at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts, located on the UH campus.
Tulane (16-6) enters the C-USA Championships riding a wave of momentum with a six-match win streak and with victories in 13 of its last 15 matches. TU completed the regular season with a 4-1 conference record, including a 4-0 win over the Golden Eagles at home back on Feb. 20. The win over Southern Miss not only snapped a two-match skid for the Green Wave, but kick started its current run of 13 wins with the only two losses coming to a pair of Top-50 squads.
If TU can take care of business against the Southern Miss, the Green Wave would take on the winner of the match between No. 5 seed SMU and No. 12 seed UTEP in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 10 a.m.
"I can speak for our entire program when I say we are all very anxious and excited to get to Houston and begin the conference tournament," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "We are happy to be the No. 4 seed, as our conference has definitely grown stronger this past year with several teams able to take home the coveted title.
"One part of this particular tournament is that we all know that we have to play well for several days back-to-back to advance and it is such a mental and physical challenge, so the team that can handle that adversity will win due to the parity of several teams. We kick off with Southern Miss on Thursday morning so we are looking to execute our game plan and continue our momentum."
Tulane's line-up features five seasoned standouts and one of the conference's top freshman players. Starting at the top, junior Klara Vyskocilova brings a 19-7 overall record into the week and is the nation's 63rd-ranked player. Junior Jenny Hois is 8-13 overall, but has won her last three outings at No. 2.
Senior Emma Levy may be the Wave's hottest player entering the conference tournament. Levy leads the team with a 22-8 overall record, has won her last 12 matches and is a perfect 8-0 at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Ipek Birol has proven all season long why she was able to crack a strong line-up made up of upperclassmen. Birol is 16-6 overall and has won her last five outings.
Senior Caroline Thornton returned from an early season injury to log a 9-8 record, including a 6-4 mark at No. 5, while senior Caroline Magnusson is 16-10 this season and enters the Championships riding a 10-match win streak.
In doubles, Vyskocilova and Birol have held the top spot and sport a 5-4 record, while the duo of Thornton and Magnusson are 16-9 overall with a 6-3 record at No. 2, and Levy and Hois will anchor the line-up at No. 3 with a 9-4 record, including a mark of 4-1.
