Women's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight
March 27, 1999 ORLANDO, Fla. - - Tulane claimed wins in four of the six singles matches, as the 35th-ranked Green Wave earned a 6-3 win over 66th-ranked Central Florida on Saturday. The win was Tulane's fifth in a row and improved the Green Wave to 13-2 on the season. Central Florida dropped to 12-3. Central Florida's Veronica Widyadharma, ranked 60th in the latest singles polls, handed Tulane's 83rd-ranked Anna Monhartova her first loss of the season after capturing a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles. Monhartova had won 14 straight singles matches to start the season and now falls to 14-1 in dual match competition. Maiko Cook won the No. 2 singles spot for Tulane with a 6-4, 6-2 win over UCF's Ann-Jeannette Svantesson, while TU's Joyce Bergman dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Gaelle Gouttefarde at No. 3 singles, giving UCF an early 2-1 lead. However, Tulane came back to sweep the final three singles spots. Jennie Ligator was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 4 singles, while Anneli Axsater improved to 8-0 at the No. 5 singles position with her 6-4, 6-4 victory. Jessica Kessler closed out singles play with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Hadas Ronen at the No. 6 position. UCF answered with a win at No. 1 doubles to pull within one, 4-3, but Tulane earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the dual match victory. Monhartova and Cook improved their doubles mark to 6-0 with an 8-1 win at the No. 2 position, while Axsater and Rollauer teamed to take home an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Tulane returns to action on Monday, as the Green Wave face Conference USA rival South Florida in Tampa.
