NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane's Anna Monhartova has been named the Conference USA women's tennis player of the week, the league office announced.
Monhartova picked up the recognition after posting a 3-0 record in singles play, while also recording a win in her only doubles action of the week. She started the week with a pair of wins in Tulane's doubleheader against Louisiana-Lafayette and American. Playing No. 1 singles, she started the day with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over ULL's Arina Uratani before posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over American's Irina Bovine.
However, perhaps the highlight of her week came in Tulane's upset win over No. 34 Tulsa. In doubles play, she teamed with Anneli Axsater to record a 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles, helping the Green Wave earn the all-important doubles point. In singles play, her thrilling 6-1, 6-7, 7-6 victory over Bianca Posada at the No. 1 spot clinched Tulane's 4-2 upset victory over the Golden Hurricaine.
Ranked 19th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, Monhartova has now won five straight matches in singles play.
The Green Wave return to action on Saturday, as Tulane travels to face Rice in Houston, Texas.
