New Orleans - Tulane women's tennis junior standout Klara Vyskocilova has been named the Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, as it was announced today by the league office.
A native of Klatovy, Czech Republic, Vyskocilova is a first time recipient of the C-USA weekly tennis honors and is the first Green Wave player to receive the award since Emma Levy picked up the honor last season on Feb. 7, 2012.
Vyskocilova, who is in her first season at Tulane after spending her previous two campaigns at Clemson before transferring, led the No. 50 ranked Green Wave to a 3-1 record last week, including an upset victory over No. 40 Ohio State and a win over C-USA rival Marshall and Illinois State, and a runner-up finish at the prestigious Blue Gray National Tennis Classic.
For the week, Vyskocilova, who is ranked No. 92 in singles, combined for a 3-1 record at No. 1 singles, including a convincing upset win over Ohio State's No. 53 Kelsey Dieters, 6-0, 6-1, and Vyskocilova teamed up with freshman Ipek Birol to go 3-1 at No. 1 doubles.
The nation's 92nd-ranked singles, player, Vyskocilova has played the top positions in both singles and doubles for the Wave this season. She sports a 16-6 overall record in singles, the second-most victories on the team this spring, and she and Birol are 4-4 in doubles.
Vyskocilova and the Green Wave returns to action this Wednesday at 1 p.m. against Samford at the City Park Pepsi Center.
