Women's Tennis Upends No. 39 Houston
March 15, 1999 HOUSTON, Texas - - Tulane claimed two of the three doubles matches to take home a 5-4 win over 39th-ranked Houston on Monday. After having split six singles matches, the two schools entered doubles play deadlocked at 3-3. The Tulane duo of Anna Monhartova and Maiko Cook earned an 8-2 win over Houston's Luciane Kelbert and Kailey Meisinger and at the No. 2 doubles spot. Anneli Axsater and Molly Rollauer teamed to give Tulane the No. 3 doubles win with an 8-6 victory over Joanna Cuncliffe and Sarah Bolle, pushing the Green Wave to the dual-match win. The Green Wave, ranked 70th in the latest ITA poll, improved to 10-2 on the year with the victory over the 39th-ranked Cougars.
In singles play, Anna Monhartova improved to 12-0 at the No. 1 singles position for Tulane, defeating Houston's Galina Seliounina 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Axsater won the No. 5 singles spot for the Wave with a 6-2, 6-2 win over UH's Bolle, while Rollauer was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Meisinger in the No. 6 singles match. Maiko Cook, Joyce Bergman and Jennie Ligator weren't as fortunate, dropping singles matches.
