NEW ORLEANS - The steady climb back to national prominence for the Tulane women's tennis program continued today with a milestone achievement as the Green Wave is ranked No. 48 in the latest rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), marking TU's highest national ranking since the program returned in 2008-09.
This week's ranking surpassed the previous high of No. 52, which Tulane earned during the month of March last season. The Wave was nationally ranked a total of 15 weeks a year ago and concluded the year at No. 58. TU opened the 2013 campaign at No. 55 and has been ranked every week this spring. The last time Tulane ranked among the nation's Top-50 was when the team completed the 2005 campaign at No. 15.
"Obviously, we are excited with the latest ITA national rankings," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "This climb towards our goal has been fun and we are going to enjoy this recognition for now because this group of girls deserves it. However, as a team, we know we are not anywhere near where we want to be. There is still a good deal of tennis to be played this spring and with everyone healthy and motivated, our hopes of a NCAA post season berth are attainable."
The Green Wave (6-5) is coming off a 4-3 upset road victory over No. 38 Georgia State last Sunday in Atlanta, which marked the program's first win over a Top-50 ranked team since the program restarted and the first over a squad in the Top-50 since defeating No. 18 TCU in the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
Tulane returns to action when it hosts a two-match home stand at the City Park Pepsi Center, beginning with Conference USA rival UAB on Sunday, March 10 at 9 a.m. TU will also host Illinois State out of the Missouri Valley Conference on Wednesday, March 13 at 2 p.m.
