Women's Tennis Opens 1999 Season with Win

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team earned straight-set victories at all six singles positions to earn a 7-2 win over Illinois-Chicago Saturday afternoon.

Anna Monhartova earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over UIC's Emina Curic at the No. 1 singles position, while Maiko Cook captured a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jacki Farr at the No. 2 spot.

Tulane's Joyce Bergman rallied from a 5-6 deficit in the second set to claim a 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) win over Sara Jackson at No. 3. Jessica Kessler took the No. 4 match-up with UIC's Serena Xie 6-3, 6-4, while Jennie Ligator was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Alyson Stalzer at No. 5 singles. Anneli Axsater closed out singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over UIC's Karen Liwanpo at the No. 6 position.

In doubles, Bergman and Ligator dropped an 8-6 decision to the UIC tandem of Curic and Jackson at the No. 1 spot, while UIC's team of Farr and Xie was an 8-5 winner over Molly Rollauer and Cook at No. 2 doubles. Monhartova and Ligator teamed to give Tulane its lone doubles win, picking up an 8-1 victory over UIC's Liwanpo and Kim Harris.

All of Saturday's matches were played inside due to rain in the New Orleans area.

Tulane returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 31, as the Green Wave play host to cross-town rival UNO. Match time is set for 12 p.m.
