NEW ORLEANS -- Led by the play of its top singles player, the Tulane women's tennis team opened the season with a 6-3 win over cross-town rival New Orleans this afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Anna Monhartova, the Green Wave's No. 1 singles player, defeated UNO's Sofia Hallstrom in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to set the tone for the entire match. From there, Tulane captured four of the six singles matches to take a lead it would not relinquish.
Also picking up wins for Tulane in singles play were Jessica Kessler at the No. 3 position, Anneli Axsater at No. 4, and Joyce Bergman at No. 5.
The Tulane doubles play was also strong, winning two of three matches. The Wave's No. 1 team of Maiko Cook and Bergman defeated UNO's Hallstrom and Isabelle Boniot, 8-6, while the No. 3 team of Kessler and Monhartova defeated UNO's Sylvia Lokollo and Ulrika Ericsson, 8-1.
Tulane will next be in action on Thursday, Feb. 3, as the team takes on the University of Southern Mississippi. The match will be played in Hattiesburg, Miss., and begins at noon CST.
