New Orleans - Tulane's 53rd-ranked women's tennis team will open the 2014 spring season with an early Conference USA test against league rival Southern Miss at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18 at the City Park Pepsi Center. There is no charge for admission and all fans in attendance will be treated to a free tailgate.

Tulane (0-0) returns six letterwinners from last year's squad that compiled a 17-7 overall record and completed the year ranked 50th nationally. Leading the way for TU will be the senior duo of Klara Vyskocilova and Jenny Hois, along with junior Emily Dvorak and sophomores Ipek Birol, Jacqui Katz and Meredith Maltby. Vyskocilova is TU's top returning singles player with a 19-8 overall record.

The 2013-14 squad also features three newcomers, including freshman Sophie Blom and the junior tandem of Margaux Hyman and Nicky Stracar.

"The first match of every year is always exciting," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "When you are finally able to see your team compete against other girls that they don't know much about and have to problem solve is really fun to watch. I expect the team to have a few nerves but that's always the case with the first match so as long as we are prepared, and I believe we will do great as usual. Southern Miss will be a nice test for us to see where we stand inside the conference and what areas we need to work on. We are ready to compete and play for our amazing and very loyal Tulane fans."

In her sixth spring at Tulane, Sisk has a mark of 73-45 and is 4-1 all-time in season openers at the helm of the Green Wave program. She has also led Tulane to four straight wins over Southern Miss since 2010.

The Golden Eagles suffered through a 0-21 season a year ago, including a 4-0 setback to Tulane in New Orleans on Feb. 20.

The Green Wave women's tennis team will play all of its home matches this spring at the City Park Pepsi Center. The City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center features 16 hard and 10 clay courts, a clubhouse with a pro shop, restrooms, showers and a meeting room. The facility is located off Marconi Blvd. between I-610 and Harrison Avenue. For more information on City Park Pepsi Center, please visit http://www.neworleanscitypark.com/tennis.html.
