New Orleans - Tulane head women's tennis coach Terri Sisk announced today the signing of Dutch standout Sophie Blom, who is eligible to compete immediately for the Green Wave.
A native of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Blom hails from Denia, Spain, where she ranks No. 70 for all women in Spain and ranked as high as No. 323 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) rankings in 2012.
"It is always a great day when you are able to sign such an amazing young lady with a zest for life like Sophie, who also just happens to be a very solid tennis player to add to your family," Sisk said. "She is a great person, coupled with a big personality and even bigger game. She will make a huge impact to our line-up and the overall make-up of our team. I expect big things for her these next four years, on and off the court."
In her brief career, Blom has notched a final appearance and a pair of semifinal showings in Grade 4 ITF Tournaments. She logged some of her biggest wins against a player ranked in the 900s in the World Tennis Association (WTA) rankings and a player ranked in the ITF 100 rankings.
Blom's parents, Diana Tolsma and Jan Piet Blom, were both professional volleyball players in Holland, and her intended major is psychology.
The 53rd-ranked Green Wave will open the 2013 spring season at home against Conference USA rival Southern Miss at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18 at the City Park Pepsi Center. Admission to all of TU's home matches is free of charge.
