New Orleans - When the Tulane women's tennis team takes the court for its spring opener in less than two weeks, the group will begin the year as the 53rd-ranked team in the nation, according to the 2014 preseason national rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Green Wave is set to open the 2014 spring season at home against Conference USA rival Southern Miss at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18 at the City Park Pepsi Center in New Orleans.
"Obviously, we are thrilled with being preseason ranked at 53," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "Every year we are getting stronger and continuing to climb the ladder. This spring will definitely push us once again so we realize that we need to continue to push ourselves daily to grow our ranking and ultimately reach our goal of becoming a postseason team."
Tulane improved two spots on its preseason ranking from a year ago when the team began the 2013 season at No. 55 and concluded the year ranked No. 50 with an overall record of 17-7. TU ranked as high as 38th last season, and the Green Wave has now been nationally ranked every week during the spring season since returning to the nation's elite at No. 58 on Feb. 28, 2012.
TU is one of four C-USA schools to receive a preseason ranking, joining Rice (#22), Tulsa (#28), North Texas (#60), and is just one of two schools from the state of Louisiana in the Top-75 (LSU #66).
Entering the spring season, a total of seven of the Green Wave's 2014 opponents are currently ranked in the preseason Top-75, including Rice, Auburn (#23), Saint Mary's (#37), Long Beach State (#42), South Florida (#59), LSU and Georgia State (#75).
