Senior Jenny Kuehn and junior Erika Valdes advanced to the finals of the singles competition and the semifinals in doubles play as the Tulane University women's tennis team enjoyed another solid outing in day two of the Wells Fargo/Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser Tournament Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.

Kuehn and Valdes will face each other in the singles championship beginning tomorrow at 9 a.m., and the pair will join forces to battle Tiffany Clifford and Seva Iwinski of Texas A&M at two hours later for the right to advance to the championship in doubles as well. The championship match of doubles play is slated for 1 p.m.

"I think it was a good day for Tulane University women's tennis," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "We had three of four semifinalists and both players in the championship match, and that is a tribute to the girls."

Kuehn advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 in over Raquel Wagner of Texas A&M, and turned around to defeat A&M's Iwinski 6-1, 6-1. Valdes, meanwhile, defeated Tiffany Clifford of Texas A&M, 6-1, 6-3, and facing rookie Tulane teammate Joyce Ardies in the semis, used her experience to earn a 6-0, 6-4 victory.

Ardies used a 6-2, 6-1 win over Arizona's Jessie Rochefort to advance to the semifinals. Rookie Carina Bjornstrom, who dropped a second-round match, had a good showing in the consolation bracket where she defeated Stephen F. Austin's Mary Harrison, 6-1, 6-2, and downed Manuela Santos of Tyler Junior College, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Kuehn and Valdes punched their ticket to the semifinals with an 8-3 win over Santos and Sara Giles of Tyler Junior College, while the combination of Bjornstrom and Ardies did the same with an 8-6 decision over Megan Langston and Kama Scott of Stephen F. Austin.

The tournament continues on Sunday with the singles championship and consolation matches at 9 a.m. while the doubles competition is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
