NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's senior duo of Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton won two doubles matches and advanced into Sunday's semifinal match, while junior Klara Vyskocilova won her singles match and moved on to the quarterfinals after two days at the 2012 Southern Regionals at the Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Magnusson and Thornton, the fourth-seeded doubles team, will battle top-seeded Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama on Sunday.
Magnusson and Thornton began the morning with an 8-3 win over LSU's Mary Jeremiah and Ebie Wilson in the round of 16 and then turned back Ole Miss' Julia Jones and Iris Verboven, 8-6, to punch their ticket into the semifinals.
Tulane's Vyskocilova and senior Emma Levy, the third-seeded tandem, were also successful in their round of 16 contest with an 8-3 victory over Auburn's Paulina Schippers and Maria Cardenas-Conti. However, the Green Wave duo saw their run come to an end in the quarterfinals with an 8-3 loss to Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran of Mississippi State.
In singles, Vyskocilova downed LSU's Ella Taylor, 7-5, 6-3, in the round of 16 and will play Alabama's Natalia Maynetto in the quarterfinal round on Sunday.
Birol suffered her first collegiate loss with a, 6-2, 7-5, setback to Ole Miss' fifth-seeded Julia Jones.
In consolation singles, Levy stayed alive with a win over ULM's Justyna Krol, 6-2, 6-1, and will play UAB's Isabel Fernandez in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Magnusson saw her singles run come to an end with a, 6-4, 6-1, loss to Auburn's Paulina Schippers.
In the Flight B singles, senior Emma Helisten fell in the semifinals after a hard fought match with Rosaura Ramirez-Vega, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Freshman Jacqui Katz defeated Troy's Samya El Hsissen, 6-3, 6-7(13), 10-6, and advanced to the finals of the Flight B consolation singles.
