HOUSTON - Sharon Siegel won the Flight 8 Singles championship and Jessica Lange claimed the Flight 7 consolation title as the Tulane University women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Rice Classic on Sunday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Siegel's singles flight win was the third of the weekend for the Green Wave as the doubles tandems of Mariam Kurdadze and Emma Levy along with Hila Elster and Elizabeth Hamlin claimed the Flight 1 and Flight 2 titles on Saturday. For the weekend, Tulane went 26-12 with a 17-10 in singles play and a 9-2 in doubles competition.
"Going 26-12 in pretty much a conference tournament is a very solid showing," Tulane head women's tennis coach Terri Sisk said. "Today, however, wasn't our best showings as we looked very mentally fatigued and a little undisciplined inside the point. Day three of a tournament is always the toughest and we have to be able to finish strong.
"After having such an amazing three tournaments this fall, it is kind of easy to be disappointed with only two doubles championships and a singles championship from this tournament. That sounds ridiculous. It is nice to now expect more from this team. Overall, we had another great showing and I am proud this team."
Siegel, who did not drop a single set all weekend, defeated Lee College's Gina Stephenson, 6-3, 6-1. All told, the Green Wave junior outscored her three opponents in the round-robin flight by a combined margin of 36-10.

Also earning singles wins on Sunday for Tulane were freshman Katherine Cecil and junior Lindsay Dvorak. Cecil defeated Jenny Cape of UAB 6-1, 6-2 while Dvorak earned a walk-over decision against the Blazers' Carolin Faught.
Tulane had opportunities to add to its impressive collection of flight wins over the weekend as Mariam Kurdadze, Emma Levy and Hila Elster advanced to the championship matches of Flights 1, 2 and 4, respectively. The Green Wave trio, however, all fell to Rice opponents as Kurdadze dropped a 6-2, 6-1 contest to Jessica Jackson, Levy lost to Ana Guzman 6-2, 6-0, and Elster came up short against Danny Trigo 6-4, 6-1.
The Green Wave will enjoy a break from tournament play this week and return to action on Friday, Oct. 22, when the Tulane team travels to Birmingham, Ala., to open play in the ITA Southern Regional Championships. From there, the Wave will wrap up fall play on Nov. 12-14 at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic in Tampa, Fla.
