Women's Tennis Heating Up At Memphis Invitational
Sept. 19, 2009 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - If Tulane women's tennis coach Terri Sisk was happy with the performance of her team on Friday, she had to downright ecstatic on Saturday as the Green Wave wrapped up day two of the Memphis Collegiate Invitational. After going .500 in day one, the Green Wave combined to go 6-4 in singles play and 3-2 in doubles action. Four Green Wave standouts - sophomores Lindsay Dvorak, Marcela Fonseca, Jessica Lange and Sharon Siegel - won their second singles match of the weekend on Saturday to advance to the front-draw finals. Dvorak defeated Mississippi's Soledad Podlipnik, 7-5, 7-5, in the Blue 2 Draw and will face Tulsa's Anastasia Erofeeva in the finals on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. Lange downed Tennessee-Martin's Jodie Tiley, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and will battle Tulsa's Caroline Beaulieu on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. for the draw championship. Fonseca and Siegel, meanwhile, defeated Tulsa's Jie Zeng (5-7, 7-5, 6-2) and Belmont's Spencer-Anne Edwards (6-0, 6-1) in the Gray 2 and Gray 3 Draws, respectively. Fonseca will play Tulsa's Ewe Szatkowska while Siegel will square off against Belmont's Lauren Irick on Sunday. Also posting singles wins on Saturday were sophomore Mariam Kurdadze in the Blue 1 back-draw and freshman Hila Elster in the Gray 2 back-draw. Kurdadze swept Samford's Taylor Morgan, 7-5, 6-3, while Elster posted back-to-back 6-1 decisions over Murray State's Lyndsey Ottosen.
In doubles play, Elster and fellow freshman Emma Helistén downed Belisa de Brito and Martie Wahl of Tennessee-Martin, 8-4, in the Gray 1 Draw. The Green Wave got a pair of wins in the White 1 Draw where Dvorak and sophomore Elizabeth Hamlin joined forces to defeat Memphis' Amanda Brown and Dara Toulch, 8-4, while Fonseca and sophomore Caroline Gerber posted an 8-3 win over Belmont's Abigail Hogan and Catherin Holliday. Tulane will close out play in the Memphis Collegiate Invitational on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Following the Memphis Invite, the Green Wave continue fall action on Friday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Houston to open play in the Rice Classic at Jake Hess Stadium.
