Women's Tennis Falls To TCU At C-USA Tournament

April 20, 2002

FORT WORTH, Texas - - The Tulane women's tennis team came up one step short in its bid to repeat as Conference USA champions, falling 4-0 to host and No. 1 seed TCU at the Friedman Tennis Center on Saturday.

The Green Wave, seeded 5th, fall to 14-12 overall and will face UAB for third place on Sunday. Last season, Tulane defeated then-top seeded UAB to win its first-ever C-USA title. TCU, in its first season in Conference USA, advances to the tournament championship match. The Green Wave are ranked 64th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, while TCU is listed 29th.

"I'm very proud of the team and the way they played today," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "The match was a lot closer than the score indicated. We came out and fought hard against a very good TCU team but just came up short."

TCU took an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Horned Frog duo of Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez posted an 8-4 win over Tulane's Maria Ivanov and Joyce Bergman at the No. 1 spot, while the Green Wave tandem of Anneli Axsater and Lucy Wood dropped an 8-4 decision to Karla Mancinas and Katrin Gaber on Court 3. Tulane did pick up a win in doubles play when Julie Morris and Ana Saaibi recorded an 8-5 victory over Leona Weirich and Saber Pierce at the No. 2 position.

Tulane fought back during singles play, but couldn't overcome a tough TCU squad. The Horned Frogs took a 2-0 lead when Aburto recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ivanov at the No. 1 spot and increased that margin to 3-0 after Perez turned in a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Saaibi on Court 4.

The Green Wave, needing wins on the remaining four courts, pushed each of those matches into third sets, only to see TCU pull out the team victory when Pierce turned in a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 win over Bergman at the No. 3 singles position.

Tulane will look to record its third Top 3 finish in the last four seasons on Sunday when the Green Wave take on UAB in the third-place match.
