Women's Tennis Claims Third Place at C-USA Tournament

St. Louis, Mo. - - Tulane earned wins at two doubles positions to break open a tie match en route to a 5-3 win over Houston, capturing third place at the 1999 Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament at Saint Louis University on Sunday.

After splitting six singles matches, Tulane won doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to clinch the win. The Green Wave duo of Anna Monhartova and Maiko Cook were 8-2 winners over the Houston team of Kelbert and Meisinger at the No. 2 spot, while Anneli Axsater and Molly Rollauer claimed the No. 3 doubles match with an 8-3 win over Houston's Sarah Bolle and Joanna Cunliffe.

In singles play, Anna Monhartova improved to 21-2 at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over UH's Galina Seliounina. Jennie Ligator captured the No. 5 singles win for Tulane with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Cougars' Sarah Bolle, while Tulane's Anneli Axsater was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Kailey Meisinger at the No. 6 spot. Houston claimed wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles positions to even the scores at 3-3, setting up the Green Wave's decisive doubles wins.

The win improved Tulane to 18-5 on the season and gave the Green Wave its highest-ever Conference USA finish.
