New Orleans - Tulane's 40th-ranked women's tennis team opened the 2013 Conference USA Championships with a strong showing this morning by dispatching Southern Miss, 4-0, during first round action at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of Houston in Houston, Texas.

Tulane, the tournament's No. 4 seed, improved to 17-6 overall and extended its win streak to seven straight and has now won 14 out of its last 16 matches, while Southern Miss completed its season with a 0-21 record. The Green Wave will take on No. 5 seed and 51st-ranked SMU in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 10 a.m. The Mustangs prevailed over No. 12 seed UTEP, 4-0, on Thursday.

"Obviously we are excited about our first round win in the tournament and moving to 17-6 on the year but on the flip side of that we realize we have a huge obstacle tomorrow with SMU," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "This match will be a true test for us for many reasons but I know the team is ready and wanting this win."

Tulane and Southern Miss played only singles today and the Green Wave took four of six matches in straight sets, including a pair of shutouts, to quickly claim the victory.

Senior Caroline Thornton and classmate, Caroline Magnusson, each rolled to identical, 6-0, 6-0, wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Thornton topped Macie Case at five, while Magnusson cruised by Emily Nettles at six for her 11th straight singles win.

Freshman Ipek Birol kept things going with her, 6-1, 6-1, win at four over Mackenzie Oskin and senior Emma Levy wrapped up the match and the win at three with her 13th straight victory, which came against Elanor Grossman, 6-2, 6-3.
