New Orleans - The 50th-ranked Tulane women's tennis team saw its bid for the title at the prestigious Blue Gray National Tennis Classic come up short today as the Wave dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 47 Virginia at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.

TU dropped to 10-6 overall and saw its five-match win streak snapped, but the Green Wave has still won seven out of its last nine matches, while the Cavaliers evened its season mark to 6-6.

"Obviously we are disappointed that we couldn't bring home the title today, but we fought hard and came up short," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "It's tough to win when you lose three courts in tiebreaks because the momentum tends to shift but we advanced to the finals and I'm proud of that. We have come so far and we are getting better as a team and we will focus on that for the rest of our season.

"Also, I am very happy for Caroline Magnusson for receiving the sportsmanship award, as she truly deserves that honor."

Today, Tulane was not able to get off to its normal strong start in doubles and Virginia was able to claim the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. UVA's Erin Vierra and Stephanie Nauta downed TU senior Klara Vyskocilova and freshman Ipek Birol at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, while Hana Tomljanovic and Maria Fuccillo defeated TU's senior combination of Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton, 8-3.

Tulane regained a foothold early on in singles, but couldn't hang on to its momentum. Virginia claimed the top two slots to go up 3-0 before Levy came through with a, 6-4, 6-3, win over Tomljanovic at No. 3 singles. However, Vierra clinched the match with a, 7-6, 6-1, win over Thornton at No. 5.

The Green Wave returns to action at home at the City Park Pepsi Center on Wednesday, March 20 against Samford at 9 a.m.
