New Orleans - Tulane's 50th-ranked women's tennis squad not only claimed an opening round today in the prestigious Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, but also gained a Conference USA victory with a 4-1 win over league member Marshall at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.

Tulane notched its fourth straight win and improved to 9-5 overall and also increased its league mark to 5-1 on the year. The Green Wave will face Ohio State on Saturday at 11 a.m. Marshall, meanwhile, dropped to 6-6 on the spring.

"Today was a solid effort by the girls with executing our plan of playing to win and playing disciplined tennis," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "We knew it would be a great first round test and it definitely proved to be just that. I am happy that we got off the courts fairly quickly so that we didn't expend too much energy on the first day of such a solid event."

Tulane began the day with yet another solid effort in doubles. TU's senior duo of Emma Levy and Hila Elster came through with an 8-3 victory over the Herd's team of Karlyn Timko and Dana Oppinger at No. 3 and the Wave wrapped up the all-important doubles point following an 8-6 victory at the top spot by junior Klara Vyskocilova and freshman Ipek Birol over Marshall's Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova.

With a 1-0 lead, Tulane increased its advantage to 2-0 following Levy's, 6-0, 6-2, win over Voscekova at No. 3 singles. However Marshall countered with its first and only point of the match with Oppinger's win at No. 2 singles over junior Jenny Hois, 6-3, 6-2. But the momentum for the Thundering Herd was short lived.

TU's Vyskocilova eased by Zaprazna at the top spot, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Caroline Magnusson was victorious at the No. 6 slot with her, 6-4, 6-1, win over Kara Kucin to clinch the victory for the Wave.
