New Orleans - The Tulane women's tennis team got off to a solid start today in its match against No. 57 Long Beach State, but could not hold on and fell to the 49ers, 5-2, at the Rhodes Tennis Center in Long Beach, Calif.

Tulane (4-9) came out strong in doubles and took the fight to the home team early on. Although Long Beach State (8-1) grabbed the No. 3 doubles spot when Holly Reid and Laura Eales downed TU's junior duo of Margaux Hyman and Emily Dvorak, 8-4, the Green Wave responded with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to claim the all-important doubles point and post a 1-0 score heading into singles.

The Wave's doubles comeback started at the top spot where senior Klara Vyskocilova and sophomore Jacqui Katz defeated Ebba Unden and Maeva Razakasoa, 8-6. Minutes later, the comeback was completed at the No. 2 slot with TU's sophomore combination of Meredith Maltby and Ipek Birol putting away Karolina Rozenberg and Julie Gerard, 8-4.

In singles, Long Beach State captured wins at the Nos. 5, 3 and 2 spots to take a 3-1 lead. However, Vyskocilova made things interesting when she notched a victory over Unden at the No. 1 position in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and pulled the Wave to within one point of tying the match.

With her victory, Vyskocilova, the nation's 62nd-ranked player, extended her singles win streak to 10 straight dating back to last fall, and she improved to 8-0 in dual matches this spring.

But today belonged to the 49ers and Long Beach State quickly closed the door on another comeback by the Wave by coming up with wins at the Nos. 4 and 6 spots to secure the win.

Tulane continues its tour of the West Coast against No. 54 St. Mary's on Sunday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. CST.
