New Orleans - The Tulane women's tennis team made the most of the Mardi Gras holiday weekend with a 4-3 victory over St. John's this morning at the City Park Pepsi Center.

Tulane (4-8) snapped a five-match skid and improved to 4-4 on its home courts this season, while St. John's saw its four-match win streak halted and dropped to 5-2 on the year.

The Green Wave got off on a strong note early on by taking the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions for the all-important doubles point. TU's tandem of senior Klara Vyskocilova and sophomore Jacqui Katz blanked the Red Storm's duo of Khrystyna Pavlyuk and Stephanie Elgegren, 8-0, at the top spot.

The Wave secured the first point of the match when sophomores Ipek Birol and Meredith Maltby downed Yanita Arnaudova and Anna Morozova, 8-2.

With a 1-0 advantage heading into singles, Tulane quickly increased its margin to 2-0 following Vyskocilova's, 6-1, 6-0, win over Pavlyuk at the top spot. With the win, Vyskociloa improved to 14-6 overall and remained undefeated in dual action with a 7-0 spring mark and has now won nine straight singles contests dating back to the fall. Earlier this week, Vyskocilova debuted at No. 62 in the national singles rankings.

The Green Wave stretched its lead to 3-0 thanks to Maltby's, 6-0, 6-1, win over Diamond Adams at the third slot.

However, St. John's made things interesting by reeling off three straight wins at the Nos. 6, 5 and 3 spots to tie the match. Birol came through for TU by outlasting SJU's Nastya Polyakova at the No. 2 position with a three-set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, victory to clinch the win for the Wave.

Tulane returns to action on Thursday, March 6 when it journeys to the West Coast to take on Long Beach State at noon in Long Beach, Calif.
