New Orleans - Tulane's 56th-ranked women's tennis team bounced back from a pair of losses last week in a big way today with a pair of 4-0 victories this afternoon against Conference USA rival Southern Miss and cross-town foe UNO at the City Park Pepsi Center.
In a rare mid-week doubleheader at home, Tulane snapped a two-match skid and won back-to-back matches today to get back into the win column and improve to 5-4 overall this spring, while Southern Miss dropped to 0-6 and UNO fell to 1-4.
"Today was a good day for us," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "We battled the cold, windy conditions and stayed on our task of playing to win and not losing focus since we knew it would be a long day. I'm proud of the girls for our team spirit today and the fight we showed. Now we are going to prepare for a tough Auburn team on Saturday."
Tulane began the day with a noon affair with the Golden Eagles and the Green Wave needed a little over an hour and half to dispatch its conference rival. TU took the all-important doubles point with identical 8-0 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Junior Klara Vyskocilova and senior Hila Elster topped USM's Kate Lanier and Mackenzie Oskin at the second spot, while the TU senior duo of Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton made quick work of Macie Case and Emily Nettles at No. 3.
In singles, senior Emma Levy chalked up a win over Lanier at the second position, 6-1, 6-0, while Elster and freshman Jacqui Katz each registered, 6-0, 6-0, victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, to finish off Southern Miss.
In singles play, the bottom of the Tulane line-up came through with flying colors and led the way for the Wave. Playing the No. 4 spot, Elster downed Benincasa, 6-0, 6-1, while Katz claimed her first win of the spring with a, 6-0, 6-3, victory over Sanchez at No. 5 position. Senior Emma Helisten made sure of the clean sweep with her, 6-1, 6-0, over Svensson at No. 6.
Tulane returns to action this weekend with a road trip to face the No. 59 Auburn Tigers at noon on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
