New Orleans - The 56th-ranked Tulane women's tennis team returned to the win column in a big way this afternoon at home by downing Southeastern Louisiana (5-1) and Xavier (La.) (4-0) in a rare doubleheader at the City Park Pepsi Center.
Tulane not only snapped a three-match skid, but improved to 3-3 on the year and 3-1 on its home courts through the early part of the spring season. Southeastern Louisiana and Xavier each suffered their first defeats of the season and both schools dropped to 1-1 on the year.
"Right now we are very focused on the process and sense of urgency, and both of those aspects can certainly defeat you," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "That is exactly what has been happening to us over the last two weeks. When you come out flat or do not take the momentum gained from doubles into singles, win or lose, it can hurt you. I am very happy about today's wins and hopefully the details we put into today's matches will show later. We have several crucial matches coming up in the next week."
The Green Wave began the afternoon against its opponent from Hammond by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles contests to claim the all-important doubles point.
Junior Emily Dvorak and sophomore Meredith Maltby made quick work of SLU's Margaux Kaltenbacher and Adriana Castillo, 6-1, at the No. 3 slot, while TU sophomore Ipek Birol and freshman Sophie Blom topped Valya Rusakova and Avika Sagwal, 6-0, at the No. 2 position to clinch the point.
The Lions tied the affair thanks to Avika Sagwal's win over Tulane's Margaux Hyman, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot. However, that would be as close as the visitors would get to the Green Wave. TU's foursome of senior Klara Vyskocilova, sophomore Jacqui Katz, Blom and Maltby were each victorious in their respective singles contests to put away Southeastern Louisiana.
In the late afternoon match, Tulane returned to the courts to face cross-town opponent, Xavier. Once again, the Wave kick started the momentum in its favor by taking the doubles point. This time, Blom teamed up with Dvorak at No. 3 and the duo dispatched XU's Amber Brown and Brandi Nelson, 6-1. Maltby and Birol were a force at No. 2 and the TU tandem blanked Brion Flowers and Simone-Alyse Ewell, 6-0, for the point.
In singles, Katz, Blom and Maltby each won in straight sets to secure Tulane's third win of the year.
TU remains at home and continues a five-match home stand against No. 21 Auburn at Noon on Friday, Feb. 14 at the City Park Pepsi Center.
