New Orleans - Perhaps it was the nerves of a season opener or just simply being unlucky, but things didn't go as planned for the 55th-ranked Tulane women's tennis team as the Green Wave dropped a 4-2 decision to 67th-ranked UC Irvine in the season opener today at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles.

Playing for the first time in the prestigious ITA Kickoff Weekend, Tulane fell to 0-1 on its young season and will face Akron (0-1) in the consolation match on Sunday at 12 p.m. CST.

"Obviously today was incredibly disappointing with losing our spring opener," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "If truth is told, we were just completely flat out of the gate and it's hard to recover any type of momentum when you play a team that's hungry to beat you. I told the girls after that I'm not concerned about this loss as it is about just shaking the nerves off and being ready to compete from here on out. I know we are a great team with a great season ahead but we are just as human as anyone else and will sometimes come up short as we did today. We have to turn our sights to Akron tomorrow and be ready to go."

After the match was delayed because of inclement weather in the Los Angeles area, the two teams hit the court for the first time this season. Tulane senior Carolina Thornton put the Green Wave up 1-0 when she topped Kat Facey at the No. 5 position, 7-5, 6-3.

UC Irvine quickly tied the match at 1-1 when Franziska Goettsching got past junior Jenny Hois, at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4. Kristina Smith then gave the Anteaters a 2-1 advantage when she defeated Tulane junior and 118th-ranked Klara Vyskocilova, 6-3, 6-4, at the top spot.

Senior Emma Levy evened the match at 2-2 when she dispatched Marivick Mamiit, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2, but UC Irvine's Ali Facy posted a three-set win at No. 6 against senior Caroline Magnusson, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 to give UC Irvine a 3-2 lead.

The Anteaters clinched the match at the No. 4 spot when Sarah Gong handed TU freshman Ipek Birol a 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 setback to clinch the match.
