New Orleans - The 53rd-ranked Tulane women's tennis team got off to a rough start this morning against No. 57 Columbia in doubles and could not recover, falling 4-0, in the consolation match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend, hosted by Duke University, at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.

Tulane (1-2) and Columbia (1-1) opened play in doubles and the Lions grabbed a 1-0 lead following their wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to claim the all-important doubles point.

In singles, Columbia captured the first set in all six contests, but the Green Wave rallied at several positions in the second set. However before Tulane could mount a strong comeback the Lions held on at Nos. 2,3 and 6 spots to take the match.

"Today was a tough day for us," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "Yet again we exhibited signs of not really coming out guns blazing ready to battle in singles. As usual, we settled in, began to get our teeth into the match in the second set but with teams of this caliber, sometimes it's too late. It's definitely not because we aren't battling because we most definitely are, but it's that we have to be able to execute a game plan with some authority from the first point.

"Even after these two losses, we have become a better team because the adversity we are dealing with from knowing we are better than this to battling with other teams, will prove to make us stronger. These are the lessons you want your team to learn early especially while playing solid teams. I'm proud of my team and I know that we will keep grinding."

The Green Wave will look to get back into the win column when it returns to action against Nicholls State at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 at the City Park Pepsi Center in New Orleans.
