NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's 53rd-ranked women's tennis team got off to a great start in its match this afternoon against No. 42 Kentucky, but could not maintain its momentum and fell to the Wildcats, 4-1, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend, hosted by Duke University, at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.

Tulane (1-1) will take on No. 57 Columbia (0-1) in the consolation match on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 8 a.m. CST. Live stats for the contest are available by Clicking here.

The Green Wave got off to a solid start in doubles, taking the top and bottom spots to earn the all-important doubles point and a quick 1-0 advantage. TU senior Klara Vyskocilova and sophomore Jacqui Katz upset UK's No. 56 ranked team of CeCe Witten and Kelsey Dieters, 6-4, at No. 1, while sophomore Meredith Maltby and junior Emily Dvorak blanked the Wildcats duo of Nadia Ravita and Caitlin McGraw at No. 3, 6-0.

As both teams settled into singles play, the Wildcats gained the upper-hand by claiming opening sets in five of six contests and went on to claim the Nos. 6,4,5 and 3 spots to finish the comeback and improve to 3-0 on the year.

"Today came down to having a sense of urgency, plain and simple," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "We took an emotional doubles point and then seemed to relax going into singles and that ultimately defeated us. We gift wrapped most of the first sets to a seasoned indoor team and even though we got our feet under us and started winning second sets, it was too late with the new ITA format. It was a disappointing loss because we were honestly capable of beating Kentucky but didn't execute the urgency when we needed to. However, there were several highlights for us and we will focus in those as we move forward with our season."
