Brown, Dicharry Pace Swimming & Diving In Season Opener
Oct. 15, 2004
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshmen Tiffany Brown and Sarah Dicharry posted individual wins in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard freestyle, respectively, and the Green Wave posted eight second-place finishes as the Tulane University swimming and diving team posted a 2-1 mark to open the 2004-05 season Friday afternoon at Florida State's Leach Center Pool. The Green Wave took care of Florida A&M and North Florida in convincing fashion, tallying scores of 255-17 and 217-76, respectively, and put up a solid showing against the No. 17 Seminoles in a 195-98 defeat. "We swam very well today, and I'm very impressed with our performance" head coach Daniella Irle said. "We feel good about what we did. Now, the focus turns to Arkansas and UNO, who we host in two weeks. This was a good warm up for us, we got to see where we stand, and I like the way we look." In addition to their individual victories, both Brown and Dicharry posted runner-up finishes, as did fellow rookies Samantha Burdine and Kate Naglick, and sophomores Linda McEachrane and Nicole Taheri. Brown finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.62, Dicharry was second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.58 and Burdine posted a 2:28.34 in the 200-yard breaststroke. McEachrane was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.56, and Taheri went 10:28.06 to post a runner-up finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle. The Green Wave relay teams rounded out the second-place finishes as Brown, McEachrane, Taylor Emerson and Devlyn Quinn posted a time of 3:58.39 in the 400-yard medley relay, and the quartet of McEachrane, Brown, Cara Davidoff and Dicharry clocked a 3:36.55 in the 400-yard freestyle.
Emerson led Tulane in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:12.20, sophomore Katherine McCoy paced the team in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.98, and Dicharry touched the wall at 53.93 in the 100-yard freestyle. All three swimmers posted third-place finishes. In Tulane's first diving action since the 1989-90 season, freshman Danielle Carrillo finished fourth in the three-meter springboard with a score of 210.90, and tallied a 195.85 in the one-meter springboard to finish fifth. "It was nice to have some numbers today," Irle said, comparing last season's team of 14 collegiate newcomers to the 2004-05 squad that features three All-Conference USA performers, six freshmen who earned prep All-American honors and a Division I transfer. "It was fun, and I think we are going to be a force in Conference USA this season." Following the trip to Florida, Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 30 when the Green Wave takes on Arkansas and cross-town foe University of New Orleans at 10:30 a.m. in the Reily Center. |
