NEW ORLEANS - With his team coming off a 2013 season that saw the Green Wave finish the year ranked 10th in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, first-year head sand volleyball coach Wayne Holly announced the addition of Madeline "Maddy" Mertz during the NCAA Early Signing Period.
A 6-1 native of Peoria, Ariz., and a proposed 2014 graduate of Centennial High School, Mertz brings impressive credentials to the Green Wave both from the sand and indoor game. She will join the Tulane sand squad for the 2015 season with her full allotment of eligibility.
"Maddy is a great addition to our sand volleyball program," Holly said. "She is an excellent student, a high-level beach volleyball athlete and shares our vision of achieving sustained competitive excellence. Maddy is one of the premier beach players in Arizona and has established herself among the very best junior beach players in the country. She is an accomplished, intelligent and versatile player with size and experience."
On the dunes, Mertz dominated on the Desert Open, USA Junior Beach Volleyball Tour where she won gold medals in both the U16 and U18 Divisions in 2011 and 2012. In addition, she was the Silver Division champion at the 2013 USA Beach Volleyball High Performance U19 Championship, claimed the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball Beach Cup and won a gold medal at the 2012 USA Beach High Performance Championship U17 Gold Division.
A four-year letterwinner in the indoor game at Centennial High, Mertz helped lead the Coyotes to a combined 78-33 record with trips to the state playoffs each year. She claimed first-team all-district honors in each of her final three prep seasons, was tabbed second-team all-state as both a sophomore and junior, and earned honorable-mention all-state distinction as a freshman. Mertz earned a spot on the PrepVolleyball.com's Sophomore 79 in 2011, was a two-time first-team All-West Valley honoree and team MVP, and was tabbed West Valley Preps Player of the Year as a senior.
A standout at the club level with the Arizona Sky and Spiral Volleyball, Mertz helped lead her teams to the 2012 Fiesta Classic U16 Open Championship and the 2011 USAV Junior National Championship - where she was named Tournament MVP - as well as a third place showing at the 2011 High Performance Championship.
Last season with Spiral VB 17 Black, she was named to the Open Gold Division All-Tournament Team at the USA Volleyball Junior National Championship. Mertz also claimed first-team All-Region 5A honors in 2010.
