NEW ORLEANS - The Green Wave sand volleyball team returns to action over the weekend when they play host to Stetson, UAB and ULM in the Tulane Pelican Classic from March 15-17 at Coconut Beach in Kenner, La.
Tulane will open the tournament with a 4 p.m. match against ULM on Friday and Saturday will feature three matches as ULM takes on Stetson at 10 a.m., Tulane takes on UAB at 1 p.m., and Stetson squares off against UAB at 4 p.m. The Wave close out the event on Sunday when they play Stetson at 11 a.m.
"I think it's going to be fun to play at home," Tulane head sand volleyball coach Alan Segal added. "Hopefully we'll get some fans out to watch us play. I know the girls are excited to play at home. I know a lot of the parents will be there, so that will be nice. The team has worked really hard to play against good teams. We've started off well and I think they're excited to play at home."
The Green Wave enter the Pelican Classic 2-0 on the year after defeating Mercer (4-1 on March 9) and UAB (3-2 on March 10) last week in Birmingham, Ala. Tulane's No. 1 team of freshman Sophie Asprey and junior Cori Martone along with the No. 4 tandem of junior Azarri Badawi and sophomore Grace Weaver are both undefeated at 2-0 on the young season while freshman Jackie Wegner and sophomore Anna Wruck, freshman Courtney Liddle and senior Milica Jovic, and freshman Mackenzie Moore and sophomore Olivia Utt are all 1-1 at No. 2, 3 and 5, respectively.
ULM comes to town 1-3 on the season - including a 4-1 win over Jacksonville on March 9 to mark the first-year program's inaugural victory - and UAB is 1-1 with a win over Mercer and a loss to the Green Wave last week at home. UAB and ULM will play each other in Monroe on Thursday before heading to New Orleans. Stetson, meanwhile, is 3-1 on the year after defeating Georgia State and Jacksonville 4-1 on March 9 while beating ULM 3-2 and falling to North Florida 3-2 on March 10.
Following the Tulane Pelican Classic, the Green Wave enjoy a week off before returning to action on March 30-31 when they travel to Miami, Fla., for the FIU Tournament. From there, Tulane will participate in the Georgia Sand Invitational from April 6-7 in Atlanta before heading to Siesta Key, Fla., for the Fiesta at Siesta Tournament from April 12-14.
