KENNER, La. - The Green Wave posted wins in No. 4 and No. 5 action, but it was not enough as the Tulane University sand volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to ULM in the opening game of the Tulane Pelican Classic on Friday evening at Coconut Beach.

The loss was the first of the 2013 for the Green Wave, who fall to 2-1. ULM, meanwhile, won its second consecutive match to even its record at 3-3. Both teams will be back in action on Saturday in day two of the Tulane Pelican Classic as the Warhawks face Stetson at 10 a.m. and the Green Wave will take on UAB at 1 p.m.

Tulane got off to a good start as the No. 4 tandem of junior Azarri Badawi and sophomore Grace Weaver swept ULM's Katie Harrington and Kyle Parks in straight sets, 21-17 and 21-18. Freshman Mackenzie Moore and sophomore Olivia Utt followed suit in No. 5 play with a 21-14, 21-17 victory over Alannah Cullum and Iren Marinova, but that would be the final point of the day for the home team.

The Green Wave had their chances in No. 2 and No. 3 as rookie Jackie Wegner and sophomore Anna Wruck won the opening set over Amy Grabiec and Michelle McNamee, 21-15, on Court 2 while freshman Courtney Liddle and senior Milica Jovic bounced back from a 21-13 opening-set loss on Court 3 to even the match with a 21-17 win in the second frame. Grabiec and McNamee, however, posted consecutive 21-17 and 15-13 wins to win their match-up and Araya and Garcia took home set three and the point by a score of 15-10.

With the team score knotted at 2-2, it came down to the No. 1 tandem of Tulane's Sophie Asprey and Cori Martone against ULM's Zuzana Markova and Tetiana Sukach. The contest belonged to the Warkhawks, however, as Markova and Sukach recorded a straight-sets decision, 21-16 and 21-10.

Following the ULM/Stetson contest and the Tulane/UAB contest on Saturday, Stetson and UAB will close out the day with a 4 p.m. showdown. From there, the Green Wave will wrap up the Tulane Pelican Classic on Sunday when they square off against Stetson at 11 a.m.
